Debunking common Wills myths

Our team has got together to debunk most common myths around Will writing that might be stopping you from getting one today!

I do not have enough assets to make a Will

Whether you are single, married, old or young, childfree, happy parent of a big family, homeowner or a sole traveller you need a Will. If you believe only those with significant assets and complicated family circumstances need a Will, you are wrong.

Redistribution of the assets is only one aspect of instructions covered in your Will. However the most important aspect of having a valid Will is to ease the burdens on your loved ones.

A Will allows you to protect your children’s future by naming people who should take care of them in case you were no longer around. It also allows you to name people who will be responsible for making sure your last wishes, including funeral arrangements, are handled accordingly.

My family is aware of my wishes

It might be the case that you have shared your wishes with the family making sure everyone’s needs have been covered for, however whether this has been agreed or not without a valid Will your assets will be distributed in accordance with intestacy rules, rather than your wishes.

To avoid potential issues and protect your assets for your loved ones having a valid, updated Will is a must.

Making a Will is a daunting process

Many people believe that making a Will is complicated and expensive process. Let us fix this misconception .

A Professional Will writer will be able to identify needs and asses the complexity of the Will you require. They will then be able to take your instructions and prepare a draft a copy of your Will. You will have a chance to make correction and changes to the draft Will and clarify points or discuss any questions you might have. The final step is for you to sign your Will in the presence of independent witnesses at which point it becomes a formal legal document.

Prices will depend on the complexity of the Will you would require, but this would be discussed prior to Will drafting in your appointment.

This is something only old people need to think about

Let’s face it, we are concentrating on getting things right short-term, especially when we are perfectly healthy and young. Some people might think they don’t own anything of great significance, therefore there is no need for having a Will.

Unfortunately there is no other way of making sure your wishes will be carried out and your assets (even not so significant) will be passed down to the people you want. Remember Will is a living document that you can update as your wishes and circumstances change.

I don’t know where to start

People often think that to make your Will you have to go to Solicitor’s office or bank. This can be inconvenient and more often than not expensive. Today, there are many professional Will writers that provide bespoke services at the comfort of your home. Consultants are able to discuss different types of arrangements suitable for your needs to make sure all of your wishes are accounted for.
